By 2050, nearly 70% of the global population will live in cities. As we move toward the future, different stakeholders have differing visions for these urban centers. Should they be denser, more productive and built for global competition? Should they focus on dignity, community and justice? Or can they survive at all in the face of ecological limits and overplanning?
This town hall from Doha Debates, in partnership with Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative, explores how we should reinvent the city. At Usina del Arte in Buenos Aires, Argentina, expert guests join students and recent graduates for an in-depth discussion of what urban centers should look like in the future—and what kind of future they should serve.
Town hall guests:
- Akel Ismail Kahera: Islamic architecture and sustainable urbanism graduate program director, Hamid Bin Khalifa University
- Guadalupe Granero Realini: Architect, professor and researcher, University of Buenos Aires
- Nicholas Boys Smith: Author, researcher and founder of urban planning research institute Create Streets
This town hall was recorded at the Usina del Arte in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moderated by Malika Bilal.
