Andrea Kitta
Professor of folklore, department of English at East Carolina University
Dr. Andrea Kitta is a fellow of the American Folklore Society, specializing in conspiracy theories, belief, vaccination narratives, contagion and the supernatural. She holds a Ph.D. in folklore from Memorial University of Newfoundland, an M.A. in folk studies from Western Kentucky University, and a B.A. in history from Slippery Rock University. Dr. Kitta’s scholarly work examines how folklore, legend and belief intersect with public health, medicine and contemporary conspiracy theories. Her award-winning monographs include “Vaccinations and Public Concern in History” and “The Kiss of Death: Contagion, Contamination, and Folklore,” which won both the Chicago Folklore Prize and Brian McConnell Book Award. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she emerged as a leading voice explaining how conspiracy theories and misinformation spread during health crises, serving as a UNESCO panelist and consultant to media organizations worldwide.
