About Joshua Mitchell

Joshua Mitchell is a professor of political theory at Georgetown University. He has served as chairman of the government department and associate dean of faculty affairs at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar. His research focuses on the relationship between political thought and theology in the West, examining how religious frameworks shape modern political movements and identities. Dr. Mitchell has authored five books, including “The Fragility of Freedom: Tocqueville on Religion, Democracy, and American Future,” “Tocqueville in Arabia” and “American Awakening: Identity Politics and Other Afflictions of Our Time.” Mitchell directs the Tocqueville Forum at Georgetown and teaches courses in political philosophy for The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) programs in the United States and Prague. In addition to his academic work, he is an avid conservationist working to restore his small forest on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and helping to develop the next generation of solar-electric sailboats.
