About R. Brian Ferguson

Brian Ferguson is a professor of anthropology at Rutgers University Newark with a research focus on the anthropology of war, peace and human nature. He is the author of multiple books, includingChimpanzees, War, and History and The Anthropology of War,” “Yanomami Warfare: A Political History,” “The Anthropology of War” (1988), “Explaining War” (1990) and “When Worlds Collide”(1992). He is a specialist in Indigenous conflict studies with extensive work on tribal warfare, peace systems and mechanisms for conflict resolution across cultures. Dr. Ferguson earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Columbia University in 1974, where he was also active in anti-Vietnam War efforts. He completed his Ph.D. in anthropology at Columbia University in 1988, based on dissertation fieldwork carried out in Puerto Rico.
